There is such a thing as internet fax, referred to on these pages:

In such cases, you could connect to the internet via modem, ADSL, DSL or 
cable and send fax transmissions at varying speeds. For ADSL and DSL you 
can expect Ethernet connections to a modem or router device to provide 
the maximum benefit of the high speed connection. Note: Some of these 
devices operate with USB as an alternative, but usually Ethernet is 
preferred.
