Most legit mailing lists are "double-opt-in", which means that you
sign up (first opt-in), then you get an email which you must reply to
in order to confirm your subscription (second opt-in). With most
mailing list software, this confirmation cannot be faked. If I recall
correctly, PCHelpers is a double-opt-in list. Therefore, one cannot be
subscribed without permission, unless a list administration is
directly subscribing people without their permission, which is
something that can get the admin in trouble on list servers such as
YahooGroups. FreeLists probably has similar restrictions.
