I agree with what Gregory said; some devices have poor quality control
or just plain poor quality. On the other hand, sometimes the latch on
the connector becomes loose, typically a sign that it's getting ready
to break. You may also need to push the connector in firmly, and/or
try to force (but not too hard) the latch into place.

There's a possibility that their modem uses a crossover cable. I doubt
it, though.
If they're sending it for free, don't complain too loudly. You could
be buying an overpriced one from the store. :)
One of your leftover cables should work quite well also.
