It was my impression that a lot of the reason for doing things the way 
they have been done was to accommodate some among us who are handicapped 
visually. If that is so, I'm for leaving things the way they are.
I have had trouble mastering the method some use to quote considerably 
more than thirty lines by inserting fresh material between the quoted 
lines but I don't think it is impossible to learn.

Like Ed, I also think the answer should come before the post that 
precipitated it, but both should be there for the sake of ones who 
haven't seen the whole thread. Sometimes I only get an answer and not 
the question first.

 I'm not sure if all the lines at the end of each post are helpful 
enough to warrant being there. Maybe one line could provide a link to 
the rest of that information in case someone needs it.
