What makes either of you think that this is face-to-face conversation?
I don't think I know what you look like, Ed, and I'm not sure about
Pen, and it's certainly not due to those white hoods that you wear. :)

Your argument applies well for IMs (instant messengers), but in email,
people may not see a message until the next day, and may need a
refresher.

In-line posting has been the standard on the Internet for literally
decades, and for good reason.

By your argument, we shouldn't bother quoting the old stuff at all.
