I would expect the wrong kind of ink to cause problems. I do recall
that Epson printers use pigments, not dyes.
Is she refilling?
I would, at the least, check that the vendor advertises compatibility
of their cartridge or refill ink with printers of the same type by the
same manufacturer.
If you have some "real" cartridges handy, might try putting them in
and running some cleaning cycles (if can) to see if that helps.
