Depends on as what file type you saved the documents when you used Open 
Office. I'd definitely not uninstall Open Office because then you can 
always open any document with Open Office that MS Word can't and can use 
"save as" to save it again in a Word-compatible format (rtf or doc).

In fact, Open Office is famous for being able to open even some files 
saved using older Word versions that newer ones can no longer open.
