Does this effect occur anywhere else?
I would be interested to know if there have been other instances of the 
problem. So far yours is the only one we know of. So while we look 
around for other evidence, it might be wise to eliminate as many 
possible causes as you can. This would start with Windows file 
condition, then infections (eg Conficker), then reports from other users 
of the site about their problems. This process of elimination should 
lead to the real cause.
