I had an NTFS drive in a similar condition. Nothing worked for me except
Powermax the Diagnostic from the Maxtor Download Web page
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm
I had Powermax do a low level format on the drive and after that I was able to
format it and transfer data to it with no problem..

Bios sees the drive.
XP windows explorer sees the drive, but won't open the drive.
XP Computer Management do not see the drive.
With bad drive plugged in it takes 20 min to get to the desktop.
Unplugged the computer boots normally.
Still tying to find my Motherboard cd so that I can make a SATA driver
boot disk so that
XP recovery Console can see a SATA drive.
Pc
aint- it only works if applied.
