Well the problem is finally solved.
HP Chat to the rescue. Bad drive apparently the DVD laser, so even
though th CD part of it worked the DVD did not.
They sent me a new one. Works great.

This may seem a dumb thing to say, but have you ever written a DVD on this
drive before? The reason is, the most combo drives are CD writer and DVD
player. if a DVD writer is in, then they aren't usually called combo drives
because the DVD writer writes both CD and DVD and also plays CD and DVD and
aren't usually referred to as Combo.
