If you can write DVDs with it, then it's not called a combo drive;
it's just a "DVD writer". It is assumed that if you can write a DVD,
then you can also write a CD unless otherwise stated. Ditto for "+";
it's assumed that any "+" drive supports "-" unless otherwise stated.

Usually, the fix for something like you describe is to try another
brand of disc.

You might also check for firmware updates. Firmware updates usually
provide support for more discs. Apparently the drives are extremely
picky about the discs. I find that I generally have less trouble as
both the drive technology and the disc technology mature, but it takes
YEARS to reach maturity.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
