The latest virus that was delivered xmas eve to run at midnight wipes
the HDD clean, in some cases the only file left was the Windows folder
and it is empty. I have heard this virus called several different names
due to what each version does the one I like is the Santa virus. I
believe you mentioned that you tried to do a repair indicating that you
have the OEM cd restore disk. What would help a great deal is knowing
what OS we are dealing with and What brand computer. Some OEM's will not
let you choose the option to repair just reinstall. If you have been hit
with this virus trying to save the current setup is hopeless. drop in
your restore disk and reinstall the entire OS do a clean install. You
have access to another computer goto bootdisk.com and download a DOS
boot disk. download it to the desktop of the computer, The computer must
have a floppy drive. Once downloaded put a formatted floppy in the drive
and double click the file you downloaded from bootdisk it will copy the
files to the floppy. take the floppy to your computer and reboot, it
will boot from the floppy, delete the partition and reformat the drive.
If your computer does not have a floppy download partition logic from
majorgeeks.com it is and ISO make an image of it to a CD-R take the disk
to your computer and boot from it. delete the windows partition, if this
is a Dell do not delete the 16MB partition. once deleted create a new
partition with partition logic then take your restore disk and reinstall
the OS. The reason you need to delete the partition first and reformat
is because when you reinstall the OS over the current OS the files are
overwritten not deleted and with this virus a part may remain somewhere
on the drive the is not overwritten. I hope this helps.
