If it can get into safe mode, then use that to carry out both simple and 
thorough disk checks. If you have access to the CDROM drive, you could 
also run a system file check (sounds like some files are corrupt). Put 
the opeating system CD in the drive, go to START, RUN and try one of these:
For windows 98:
SFC
For windows XP:
SFC /SCANNOW
