  Those symptoms suggest possible poor contact with the drive cables at 
one or both ends. Replacing the IDE cables and spraying some 
petrochemical based contact cleaner on the pins may improve matters 
considerably. Once that's done, running drive maintainance (scandisk or 
chkdsk) could help as well. Note: These symptoms are typical of hardware 
issues, not software ones, so running those other programs won't deal 
with it.
