[pchelpers] Computer Freezes

My computer runs on Windows 2000. Lately it has begun freezing (for
lack of a better term), most especially during bootup. Everything
proceeds normally, then all of a sudden the bootup just stops. After
several minutes, the boot resumes as though nothing had happened. It
happens at various stages of the boot process, sometimes near the
beginning, sometimes when it's almost done. One time it was not
associated with the bootup. It had been running normally for a few days
and just "froze", with black screen and absolutely no response from the
mouse or keyboard. The only thing I could so was unplug the computer
and force a reboot that way (I don't seem to have a reset button on the
computer). When it rebooted, it could not find my hard drive, only my
second hard drive. So, I unplugged it again and tried rebooting a
second time, and only that time did it find my hard drive and reboot
successfully. I have no associated error messages, other than those
found in the event viewer. The event viewer sometimes will say: "The
device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, is not ready for access yet." or "The
driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0." Other
times there are no associated error messages in the event viewer. I've
run all the various antivirus, adware, spyware programs and everything
appears clean.
Is the hard drive failing? Or a power problem to the hard drive
perhaps? All the cables are plugged in securely. It's an old computer
(Pentium 3) and an old hard drive, so neither owe me anything. I'm just
hoping not to buy another new computer at the present moment.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
