The name-brand vendors seem to be putting on 3- or 1- month starter
licenses nowadays, and in most cases, it really is on there, but you
have to click on the icon to set it up in order for it to become
active, which might be all that the popup is about.
You could have him call up Symantec for support. They may not want to
help until he pays to extend (or create) the subscription, though. The
other option that I can think of is to have him uninstall it, and
install something else. Or, you can go with what you're fearing, and
try to walk him through doing something where you're dependent upon
his descriptions to tell him what to do.

Depending upon what mood you're in, and your opinion of Dell, you
might want to remind him that he can attempt to get a refund while
it's still in warranty.
