You didn't mention whether you did all the usual malware scans.
At first glance it seems like you've picked up some spyware or something.
Maybe XP SP2 broke something the uninstall couldn't fix.
Have you tried your restore points?
Does HijackThis! show any suspicious processes you can't identify?
Does your firewall show a lot of possible phone-home attempts?
You could try a static swapfile.
Also see what happens when you limit windows to half your RAM in the
system.ini vcache section.
The line should read
