John,
1. I have used image back up for several years. In fact today using
Symantec Ghost this is an automatic process once er month with weekly
incremental backups.
My experience has been that when the C:Drive goes bad for some reason, the
recovery to put your system back is as simple as installing a replacement
drive and restoring the back up. As long as you are not trying to change
operating systems or hardware this works well because it is possible to boot
from the Ghost CD and do a total restore. Under these circumstances you are
up and running as though you never lost the drive.
2. This type of backup comes in hand too even though you have lost your
computer and had to replace it, maybe with a new Operating system. You would
have to restore the image backup to an equivalent hard drive and then you
could copy data files etc. to the new C:Drive. However it would still be
necessary to re-install programs on the new system. I have not had good
success with most programs by transferring them to the new system since the
needed entries in the registry are not there. So it only works with some of
the older programs that do not require registry entires.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
