I have found Norton Ghost to be really reliable for transplanting Full OS,
applications, and data to new drives. I use it for upgrading to larger discs
and also for making clone copies for emergency drive replacement. This is
really handy for critical operating machines (shop front and home office),
as it allows me to swap a drive, load the most recent data backup (if on a
single drive), and keep running with a downtime in terms of minutes. The
limitation is you cannot use the clone drive in a different machine, it must
go either into an identical machine or the original. That's fine assuming
you are not "pirating".
Cheers

Subject: [pchelpers] Better approach to OS transfer needed
In recent times there have been more requests involving transfer of old
operating systems along with installed programs to new media, such as
when hard drives begin to wear out and need replacing.
The oft used approach is to direct copy the files and re-install the
operating system followed by the applications (long and tedious).
The subject of making an image of it has cropped up, but I'm unsure
about this. Got some good suggestions?
