19. What is the policy for service packs?

Microsoft will provide 12 months of support for a service pack after the
successor service pack is released.
Support may be extended to 24 months for those service packs where
Microsoft believes customers will need additional time for testing and
deployment. For example, Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) will
receive 24 months of support after Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is
released.
If support for a service pack is extended, Microsoft will announce that
at the time that the successor service pack is released.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
