Anti virus and intrusion prevention systems may be insufficient to
ensure network security against modern cybercrime, it has been claimed.

Managed IT security provider FireEye stated that advanced malware
detection and protection solutions are required to defend against the
most covert and targeted web attacks.

The company added that universities and colleges are becoming
increasingly aware of the threats posed to their confidential data and
resources.

Ashar Aziz, founder and chief executive of the group, commented: "They
are among the growing numbers acknowledging that anti virus and
intrusion prevention systems cannot detect the sophisticated, covert
attacks happening every day through mainstream websites and applications
such as Web 2.0, user-generated content sites."
