Given the evidence, this is not likely to be a fluke. The question is:
has this triggered a problem with XP, or has the Epson software got a
bug that causes it to gradually damage other files? Things like poor
memory management may account for this.
Why not do some basic things, like checking if the system files are
intact? Run a registry check for any bad entries (there is a utility
available from http://www.pcprivacysoftware.com/
called Registry rescue I use to clean the registry up and maintain it).
Are you able to install any other printers?
