My question was merely can I go to  a computer  store and  pay cash  for a CD 
ROM which I then install and register with the company?  This should entitle  
me for a year   of  signature files without further payment. I do not intend on 
electronic payment.

Is Bitdefender's free version still without an autoprotect function? 
That makes it quite useless for most users, especially since most other 
antivirus programs now have this essential feature in their free 
versions too:

Many free AVs are better than Norton and McAfee, and almost all use less
