I'm sure that AOL does some things right and well, but we have a living
example before our eyes of someone who is suffering real and daily hell
due to AOL, Arlene, and who consequently accidentally spreads this chaos
and confusion into the email boxes and lives of many other people.
AOL is a badly run company whose exceptionally badly designed program
does things in violation of all standards; even worse, it forces stuff
down its customers and their correspondents' throats. This kind of
behavior is outrageous and antisocial. If consumer protection agencies
had enough staff and time, they would have long since fined and/or
closed down the joint.
All of this is not the opinion of only some list members; it is
established fact among any and all computer experts, and i'm just
reporting this expert opinion, not reporting my private, amateur opinion.
In fact, AOL is such an exceptionally badly designed program that PC
World declared it the worst tech product of all time! See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AOL for more details on this nightmare that
it would be good to finally end.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
