Hi Susan,

Xlibris is another such site, and has been around for at least a
decade. I don't think they support free publishing any longer,
though; hey apparently now charge a minimum of $500.
They sell via the large bookstore chains, I understand, so it could be
a good way for a starting author to "break in". I don't know if Lulu
sells via the chains, but if not, you'll get less exposure.
I've read a number of warnings about self-publishing sites in which
the contract specifies that the site holds the copyright on the
manuscript; whatever site you go with, John, you may want to check
this out first. This is normal for standard publishers, but may cause
a problem if you go with a self-publishing site, and then want to have
a standard publisher handle it; you wouldn't be able to in this case,
since the self-publishing company holds the copyright.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
