I'm thinking I could have taken the "C" drive out of the sick Dell and hook the drive up to a good computer and then run a Windows2000 repair on the C drive and then put it back into the sick computer. Would that have worked?

The part you missed, besides the part that he couldn't boot was he couldn't use his a: drive or his cd drive. So, how could he fix anything?
