Ok,
I'm in no hurry; I have Opera. Did I tell you I'm crazy
about her?

Let me take a look at pop-up-stopper, a lot of these
programs install spyware such as gator and savenow.net and can
raise havok with a machine.

    Hi David,

One is called "Pop-up Stopper" by Panicware and the other
one is Cleanup 3. I have uninstalled both and removed
references from the registry.

I succeeded in copying the IE6 file to both folders but
have not attempted the Explorer.exe. I too was not sure
version is right.

I have been unable to restore. I can go "Start >
Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore" and
load the wizard and follow the instructions but alas, it will
not  restore.   I have now tried 5 different dates to restore;
no will do.

I copied the msconfig file from my Windows 98 cd and
Windows xp has accepted it ok. I use it often.

    Carl

You indicated you ran cleanup 3.0 (this can be
configured to only do a standard cleanup which wouldn't get
rid of cookies or mail-groups) and there was another program
you mentioned. Also you copied one file and it showed it
copied and one that didn't copy correct? What was this other
program again? You were unable to do a restore from a previous
date, correct? I mostly work on 2000 and previous OS's as our
company is holding off on XP, however, I did load it as a
dualboot on my laptop last night so I can boot into it, I
thought sfc didn't work in xp that it was sfp or something
else, also msconfig does not work in xp.

        Hi David,

Bottom line. What caused my unit to stop opening
Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer?

The only thing to remember about dos is that you
need to remember that the folder and or files name may be
different and show a tilde and you have to type the path as
dos see's it. I use it a lot also especially on worms and
virus's that are stubborn.

            Good point about using Opera.

Carl..use DOS and be done with it..!
You can see anything and everything there is to
see if they are still there...You can also thru DOS call what
ever you nuked back and fix the folders if they have not been
written over..In your case they probably are as you have added
and shut down.
DOS will let you by pass the explore and give
you the same information. But I have not a clue what your
going to do with the information. Your system is broke..
You now have another browser, a better
browser..so why do you want to fix the old one..Nuke it.!

              Hi Bob,

Opera did not fix explorer.exe and I can not
browse to those folders. I'll use Dirmagic later from dos
prompt to see if I can execute the install file.

                Hi Carl,
Look here and you'll find the setup program.
You may still need the ID numbers,
                but who knows.

The cab files are here also.

                | There is a folder I386 on the XP cd and
that is the file you
                | need, it is like what you know of as cabs
for the older
                | windows. I copy this to the partition I
install the OS to so
                | it is available.
                | What is wierd is that Carl indicated he is
having problems
                | with both explore.exe (windows explorer) and
iexplorer.exe
                | (internet).
