I value and use Glyphosate as a weed killer BUT it is being abused by our food
growers to the effect that most vegetables and bread contain traces of the
chemical. I've signed the petition. It's not very well put together. Wind the
page down to find the form. John T

#StopGlyphosate: a chance to tackle fundamental issues in pesticide safety and
agriculture?
Dear CEO friends,This morning, Corporate Europe Observatory joined 37
organisations from across Europe to launch the #StopGlyphosate European
Citizens Initiative (ECI – seefull text). We’re hoping to collect at least one
million EU citizens signatures before the summer, as this is probably when the
European Commission and national governments will take the final decision on
glyphosate.The initiative calls for:
- A ban of glyphosate-based herbicides;
- An important change in the rules for pesticidesThe scientific evaluations
used by EU public food safety regulators to authorise pesticides on the market
on published evidence and not, as is the case now, secret industry data;
- The setting of EU-wide mandatory reduction targets for pesticide use, with
a view to achieving a pesticide-free future.
You can sign and share the ECI here (#StopGlyphosate).Getting rid of glyphosate
is very important, but it is also a great opportunity to highlight the deep
flaws in the EU’s rules on pesticides approval and to push for reform. It’s
also a chance to talk more about much-needed changes in European agriculture.We
think that the EU must change the terms of trade to enable farmers to make a
living without poisoning themselves, and to use agronomy practices that do not
compromise public health and our capacity to produce food in the future. The
upcoming reform of EU farm subsidies (the Common Agricultural Policy) will
provide a very good opportunity to do this.Many thanks,Corporate Europe
ObservatoryPs: Next week, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will be
voting on the controversial trade dealbetween Canada and the EU (CETA). Do the
CETA CHECK and ask your MEPs to vote against this trade agreement that will put
social, health and environmental standards on the line. |
