On.
Lt. Jorek accompanied Ensign Darrow to the engine room on the
Dauntless. He was pleased to see that everything appeared to be in
order. The engineers who had been on standby had wasted no time in
prepping the ship. On this mission, there would be a total of ten
engineers, plus himself and Ensign Darrow. Jorek had also noticed the
other engineers had taken a liking the Emma, so he knew they would have
no problem with what he was going to state next.
"Attention all," Jorek stated evenly. The other engineers who had
previously been aboard all turned to give him their attention. "Ensign
Darrow here shall be acting as my second on this mission. Will you
please bring her up to speed on what's going on here? I will be
attending the captain;s btiefing."
He glanced at Emma's eager face. "I would like a full report on the
ship's readiness when I return from the briefing." Jorek turned and
left engineering to attend the briefing.
Rayne looked up from his notes when he saw the final person he had been
awaiting, walk in the room. He was slightly surprised to see Jorelk
instead of Lt. Valen, but he knew Jrek to be a competent engineer.
"Now that everyone is arrived," Rayne said suddenly, "We shall begin
our briefing."
The lights in the mess hall/conference room dimmed slightly. Beind
Commander McCloud a holo-image of a small planetoid appeared.
"Approximately three years ago, te Cordovian Colony, on this planetoid
was in habited by a population of five thousand colonists." The
holo-image zoomed into a location on the planetoid. The darknesss of
space was replaced by the artificial lighting and atmosphere being
produced beneath the massive domes which protected the colony. "The
planetoid hs no star which would give it heat and light, but it has
been fouind to be rich in mineral deposits which have proven to be
beneficial in making of the raw matter which is used in common
replicators everywhere.
"Again, three years ago, the colony was destroyed by a race know as the
Firegon." The peaceful image of the environment inside the dome was
suddenly replaced by violent images of disruptor blasts slicing easily
through the domes. Colonist who were not being sucked out through the
ruptures in the domes were being crushed by falling buildings or being
disintegrated by disruptor blasts from orbit.
Fifty people," Rayne continued, "out of a colony of five thousand
survived this massacre. The Uss Eagle had answered their distress
call, but were not able to make it here in time to save more lives.
"Starfleet has rebuilt the colony. Because f the planetoid's wealth in
raw materials, they have decided to try the colony once again. They
have reinforced the colony's defensive capabilities in case the Firegon
should make another attack. They want us to check on the readiness of
the colony.
"Engineering, it will be your duty to go over all the colony's
systems. Check on their abilities to withstand another attack from
space. Tactical." Rayne looked directly at Cadet Drake. "You will go
over the new batteries which have been installed in the complex. Check
over targeting capabilities of objects in space.
"Sciences. It will be your job to determine the efects, if any, the
attack has had on the planetoid itself. Check for any residual
radiation problems and also the raw minerals. There shouldn't be any
adverse effects, but one can never be sure.
"Now. As for the Firegon themselves," Rayne glanced to Ensign
Mellows. "They have been relatively unheard from snce our last
encounter with them. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything. To
brief us on what we know of them, I have asked our science officer to
brush up on any knowledge we have of them." HIs gaze again reruned to
the science officer. "Ensign? What do you have for us?"
