my answer:

1) because the sky objects are beautiful and interesting
2) because we get to see things that are really, really far away, without even
leaving our back yard (or just by driving a few miles from home to get to a
star party)

I recommend for the students to read a book on astronomy, such as "Nightwatch"
by Terence Dickinson (available at the public library) and see what amazing
things we can see in the sky - even with the naked eye or binoculars (any
binoculars that they happen to have at home), or through a telescope. '

another good resource -

http://stars.astro.illinois.edu/sow/sowlist.html - "Stars" website by Prof Jim
Kaler. they can click on the name of a naked-eye star and learn amazing things
about what they are seeing.

  I totally agree
we look at deep space objects because they are interesting,
fascinating and pretty! And it is Fun!

Good friends are like stars. You don't always
see them, but you always know they are there.
