If well written, I think this is a very fitting idea for comics. Over the
years some comics have truly been able to reflect our culture and tackle
controversial issues to good effect. When done well you can even go so far
as to say they help teach their readers to think critically about the comic
book story's real life counterparts.
Green Arrow and Green Lantern tackled some tough issues based on real life
events, such as Green Lantern coming to grips with the idea that there are
plenty of "villains" who stay within the law and use it to oppress the poor.
When Green Arrow's partner Speedy turned out to be addicted to heroin it
caused a huge stir with the public who thought that it was wrong to cover
drug abuse in a "kid's" book, much less have a hero be the one hooked on
drugs. The X-Men have been living off the civil rights movement since their
first issue. The revamp of Magneto where they revealed his origins as an
Auschwitz survivor was delving into dark places of our real world that few
comics had ever touched before. Then there are other pieces like the
Watchmen and the Dark Knight Returns that take aim square at our senses of
right and wrong and our faith in the establishment.
I think this story has a lot of potential and will be curious to see how it
pans out.
