Well, to my opinion, if there is one thing that the Ultimate line,
Smallville, and the recent (good) comic book films has taught me, it's
that there should be no sacred cows in comic books.
When dealing with characters with 50+ years of history, then there
comes a time when you need to re-evaluate the character, and bring it
back to it's core, and discard some of the associated detrius. I think
most of us will agree that the Byrne "Man of Steel" run on Superman,
immediately post-crisis, was one of the most refreshing and needed
things that ever happened to the man from Krypton. Similarly, Bat-Man
Year One brought us back to a Batman who was dedicated, hard working,
and had nary a hint of "Bat-Shark-Repellant." So, that they want to
take a fresh look at Cap's origins doesn't bother me at all.
Now, as to what they want to do? Does that bother me? Not really. When
Cap was created, or reintroduced, there were political and societal
reasons that the kind of story they are now considering would have been
unpublishable. But in today's day and age, is it impossible to consider
that our government would have been more likely to test an
experimental, and potentially deadly substance on a black man (or group
of black men) before they tested it on a WASP (even a puny, sickly one
like Steve Rogers)? No. Is it worth exploring this idea? Well that
depends.
It could be written well, and be interesting, and we might love it. Or,
it could turn into a propaganda piece, or a sacharine soap-opera story,
and we might loathe it.
The long and the short of it is, the idea, in and of itself, doesn't
bother me. I reserve further judgment until the book has been published.

interesting companion. Give me a man or woman who has read perhaps three and
you give me a dangerous enemy indeed."
