I think if you're looking to do that, there should be a plan from the
beginning of what will happen if he does not work out.  For example,
Nightcrawler was made with the intention of becoming heavily involved in
some way in Sanson's X-men arc he's hinted at.  If he didn't work out as a
PC, maybe he could easilly run into the open arms of Professor X.

  But 'vanish' in what sense? Retire? Die? Get retconned into never having
been introduced?

  Orrrrr....simply become an inactive PC cluttering the canvas...the very
thing I'm hoping to discourage.
