[oxfordgamers] Re: MandrakeSoft Files for Bankruptcy Protection

The folks I talk to seem to think that Mandrake is
sort of the K-mart of the Open Source movement.

On one side, you have Red Hat. RH is the supreme Open
Source offering for newbies. Great marketing and
pretty good support. And great marketing. They also
have the best marketing.

On the other side you have Debian. Debian seems to be
the choice among Linux purists and open source
zealots. No marketing. No support. Debian does not
like you. Go away. Obviously, this approach has
massive appeal among the open source intelligencia.

In the middle you have Mandrake. Not as
newbie-friendly as RH and not as stuck-up as Debian.
So the user base tends to run off in either direction.

I gave RH a shot and would never go back to Mandrake.
Package managment and hardware support for RH blows
Mandrake away. Debian is just a little too complicated
for me. Perhaps when I have gained more Linux mythos I
will try it again. But for now, RH seems to be the
most accessible Linux distro for recovering Microsoft
users.

The internet has given everyone on earth a voice, and apparently they want to
use that voice to complain about the XBOX and PS2
