Lynn and I caught the new Bond flick on Friday. I must
say I was impressed. If you are a fan of the genre,
this one won't let you down.
My big problem with Tomorrow Never Dies was that it
was basically a shoot-em-up as opposed to a spy flick.
Luckily, Pierce Brosnan also made Tailor of Panama and
The Thomas Crown Affair to atone for this rather
crappy Bond installment. But Die Another Day hits all
the right notes for a Bond flick and also makes some
successful updates to the series.
Bond purists will be happy to note that the car of
choice for MI6 is again the Astin Martin. Note that AM
is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford, as is
Jaguar. This explains why the 3 promonantly featured
rides in this film are an Astin Martin Vanquish, a
Ford Thunderbird, and a Jaguar XJ.
Halle Berry aquits herself reasonably well as Jinx.
And this character was possibly the best update to the
genre. Feelings about Berry aside, the character
works.
Some hold-overs from recent Bond films still work, and
in a lot of ways work better in this film. John Cleese
keeps his upper lip properly stiff and delivers great
comic relief as Q. Also look for a great curveball
from Moneypenny. Judy Dench is still very compelling
as M and delivers a memorable performance, torn
between loyalties to Bond and MI6.
All in all, it's a winner *IF* you like Bond films.
