Point taken.
However I would argue that Blade, The Crow, Bulletproof Monk and the
Turtles do qualify as superheroes. All have fantastic super abilities. I'm
not familiar with From Hell, Ghost World etc.... actually, I might indeed
count them.
As for Mask of the Phantasm, I don't mind adding in animated movies
to the list. Certainly with the small number of animated superhero movies
that have been released in theaters it won't pump the list up too much. In
which case Mask of the Phantasm goes in the top four by my reckoning. Akira
is another matter. It's based on Manga, which is a close cousin to the
comic book but is generally considered a seperate genre. However I'd say
Japan has a long history of being ahead of the US in their appreciation of
animation as a quality art form.
If Howard the Duck had been wearing his invincible Iron Duck armor
then he could qualify both by my comic book standard and Aaron's superhero
standard. But he didn't, so we'll lock him in a room with a gremlin and a
big bucket of water.
