Hi, everyone. Both, wils suggestions for a basic screen reader, and
Pete's ideas of audio interaction are great. I know that there are a
few of you who will have to do the somewhat bothersome worrying about
how the thing is going to or supposed to work. Many of the rest of us
are just primarily interested in the fact that it _does work.
While in the beginning stage of the list it was said that we should not
bank one access program against another, saying what one will do and
what another will not, at the same time, there is a screen reader of
yore which might be mentioned to give a view of perhaps a good lesson
learned. The reader I am talking about is the ASAW screen reader.
Those who have been in the blindness technology scene for a while might
remember the old ASAP screen reader for DOS. Well, it's Windows
counterpart was, ASAW, which stands for Automatic Screen Access for
Windows. You might remember that the DOS reader was wonderful and did
virtually anything one would want a DOS screen reader to do.
While ASAW for Windows was certainly a good screen reader in its own
right, the control panel and operation of the screen reader involved an
almost exclusive console interface, which was combersome to understand
and or operate.
The so-called Automatic screen access wasn't so automatic after all.
Still I hated to see the reader just drop out after Windows 98 and M E.
Who knows what might have happened if this product might have continued
to be developed and updated?
For the thing just to work and read the necessary elements one will
need to do the task at hand would be the ultimate choice of like! And,
when this is not possible, or, at least, not complete for the job,
certainly, customization could come into view.
I just don't think the average or even the above-average majority of
the blind or low vision pc users will be the $35-per-hour, engineer,
that's all!
While you're at it, have a blessed day!
Tony
