First, as an old timer who has worked on some fairly large systems I think
defining the project with a minimal scope for goal setting is essential at
this point. Sure, we would all love an electronic set of eyes to get around
with, I'd prefer some dna fixer up though, but to get off the ground we need
a small target so we can focus resources toward guilding a working
prototype. It's gonna take at least a year to get anything built that is
useful, robust and expandable for the other things we would want. Let's not
try and build a single module or program that tries to do everything.
Modular design will allow diferent projects to be worked on by diferent
interest groups. Defining all interest groups at this time will distract
resources from getting anything done and might put the whole project in
jeperdy. The original target was a functional screen reader for Longhorn to
be completed in about a year if I remember and that is no mean task.
