Matt -
I am currently working on some CBC data and it looks like 2004 is the year that
Cacklers were split from Canada. I am not certain how to deal with the
previous records of small Canadas. Maybe Canada with a note: Cackler pre-split
or something like that. I would be interested to hear if there is a better way
to do that. I have received a few of your older records, but they were easy to
validate.
Good birding,
- Trent

Subject: [orebird] Older field notes
Hi Folks,
I just wanted to give you a heads up that I am here and there entering my old
fieldnotes (80s and 90s) into eBird. Perhaps some of you have seen these
already. They end up in a variety of configurations, from just a county-level
entry for one or two species for which I didn't list a precise location (e.g. I
just said we saw one along Highway 84 in this county), to fully documented
locations, times, species, numbers, etc.
For some of the flagged birds my notes have good documentation; for others my
fieldnotes have no further information (usually easy ID birds, e.g. American
Avocet). For a few of them I remember the sighting like it was yesterday and
can add a few words; for others, especially just high numbers, I don't have
anything to add.
Once in a while I will say I have a photo. I actually got into this present
project because I was considering digitizing some of my more significant older
slides for inclusion in eBird, but then realized it would be best for me to
first have the checklists entered into eBird and later add the photos. So, I'm
working on a box of handwritten fieldnotes. The photos will come later; maybe
even a year later....
Doug Robinson already caught me entering 3000 Canada Goose from the early 80s
at Finley, which was before the split with Cackling, so I changed that to
Cackling/Canada. Many other smaller numbers of goose though, especially in
eastern Oregon, ... that I already entered, I have left at Canada Goose. But,
maybe I should change all those too? Before what date? I'm interested in your
opinion.
Anyway, if you see anything funny in my lists, please email or call. I have
also caught myself forgetting to select the correct years (left it at 2016
instead of selecting 1982), and I'm sure there are other errors possible in
this process.
If you see anything funny, just email or call. These will be for every county
in Oregon, so eventually no one will be left out! Haha!
Thank-you,
Matt Hunter
