Freezing for Short Time snapshots I want to avoid because supposedly
primary-standby is in Maximum Availability mode.
Freezing standby effectively freezes LGWR if primary.
Please correct me if I am wrong here.
Online snapshots require Oracle database in backup mode or to cancel
managed recovery. Q.E.D.

You can use RMAN to take backups from a standby no problem, this is
well documented. If you want to take a user-managed backup then
you'll want to cancel recovery first and then copy the datafiles and
arch logs (or take snapshots).
