E\oraXXX\init\initXXX.ora is just a directory and file name, you need to
substitute the correct filename and location for your installation.

It doesn't work.
[root@tux925 root]#
[root@tux925 root]# su - oracle
-bash-2.05b$
-bash-2.05b$ sqlplus "/ as sysdba"

SQL> startup pfile=E:\oraXXX\init\initXXX.ora;
LRM-00109: could not open parameter file 'E:oraXXXinitinitXXX.ora'
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters

I have a slight suspicion that the "bash" thing is the problem. It doesn't
recognize
anything like "E:\"? Should I get rid of my OS and switch to the quasi-OS that
does
recognize it?
