Ryan,

In 8.1.7.4.1, with optimizer_mode =3D FIRST_ROWS, no stats on sys =
objects, Forms 4.5 and JVM installed
(ie lots of objects & lots of synonyms) we had significant performance =
problems due to synonyms because of the time taken querying the DD to =
resolve them.

See http://www.mail-archive.com/oracle-l@xxxxxxxxxxx/msg28034.html

So in the past you could get performance problems with a single user.

This may not be relevant with more recent versions, but you didn't =
mention what version (or what optimizer_mode).

Bruce Reardon

Ryan,

It's been a while since I've read the article, but, if I recall=3D20
correctly, the major points were:
1.) Increased library cache consumption w/ pub. syns., particularly
with a large number of users.
2.) Additional latching and/or serialization due to lots
of pub. syns.

Both the above points are not the type of thing you'd notice in
a single user test or small-scale test. These are the types of
things that come up on large systems, when it comes to scalability
limits.
