It was quite a while since this thread posted but in the meantime I figured out that ASM needs ocssd daemon because this is the way of establishing communications between database instances and ASM instance. Now it's clear why installing non-RAC Oracle home with ASM has to mess with inittab and /etc/init.d/

Oracle 10g does mess with init.d scripts even you dont have RAC installed. It's because of ASM which uses those init.d processes.
