All good suggestions so far.
I will add one more -- there has to be an FTP server (ftpd) running on the
server-side of the connection.
Most flavours of Linux include an "ftpd" binary, but many do not start it by
default.
Have you tried SCP instead? That usually works "out-of-the-box".
