They are DRM, but I believe that the only time Amazon has pulled back the books
is because someone put up the book for sale without having the rights (there
was a big stink about 1984).
I believe there was also a case where amazon disabled someone's account becaase
of their return practices with physical merchandise and that disabled their
Kindle. In that case, I believe Amazon had to reinstate the account and just
block future purchases.
