If I can recall it correctly the problem is in using 'select * ...'.
Try instead explicit reference of the column:

SELECT PLAN_TABLE_OUTPUT FROM table(DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY('plan_table',
'N1','ALL'));

Yes, and searching Oracle documentation suggests that the display_cursor
function is available in 10g Release 2.
