automating stats and histograms

I'm looking for feedback from those that have experience setting
dbms_stats using the skewonly and repeat options and then also those that
have setup auto with table/index monitoring.

Was the result or outcome good?
How is the overhead associated with monitoring on tables/indices and auto?

Any good white papers out there on this?
