Re: Strange problem with controlfile

I have mounted the instance using pfile with one good copy o control file.
Database is up and running for the users. However, I do not understand why
oracle complains for control file when I gave startup no mount. As per my
understanding control file is read only when database is mounted. This sounds
very strange after all !

I don't recall at the moment- are you stuck in such a way that you cannot mount
the db because of controlfile issues, and you don't have a way to move the
controlfile now ? Do you have a backup of your spfile ? You can always leave
out the problem controlfile description, assuming you have more than one.

Thank you for the comments. But , will the control file location be read when
database is in no mount state? My understanding is that control file is read
only when database is in mounted state.

I just wanted to second what Andy says- use RMAN to move / duplicate your
control files. I have messed around with this using cp but rman works better
overall.

Hi Sreejith,
I have seen this before. It has to do with the way OMF is handled on ASM.
The best way to do this is use RMAN to restore the controlfile to another
location. See this note for details: *How to duplicate a controlfile when
ASM is involved [ID 345180.1]*
I have found ways to get ASM to recognize files with non omf names, but the
above is the cleanest supported way.
