I gotta go with Mladen on this one. One of the most brilliant colleagues I
have worked with whose abilities continually amazed me was seeking a job at
the same time as I was. He was in a different country from his birth and I
wasn't. Many people think that if you don't speak good English you must be
dumb. Guess who got more job offers - him or me?
You may think you can spot the hot-shots in an interview, but I think
that just means you haven't hired very many people. Even an industry titan
like Lee Iacoca admits that he was unable to truly separate out those with
"fire in their belly" from those that just gave a good interview.
Jared, since most of us are involved in hiring people and are all want to
be hired, I hope you won't consider this too far off-topic.

I wasn't taking part in this debate because I usually have better things
to do, but it's Friday, around lunchtime, and busting some chops will
make my lunch taste better. So, how would you evaluate somebody's
"general intelligence"? IQ test? When we evaluate somebody's intelligence
without scientific method (and psychology is not quite an exact science,
except when one is being judged by a jury of his peers) we're actually
estimating somebody's similarity to ourselves, nothing more. In other
words, your proposal amounts to hiring people that are as similar to
yourself as possible. I don't really know you, so I can't tell whether
this would be a good thing (or, to put it differently, I don't know
whether you are similar to myself), but standards and qualifications
exist precisely to spare people from some bozo evaluating their "general
intelligence". Have a nice weekend.
