SV: InstantClient

Ron,

Yes, I tried it two months ago. Here is my old notes:

How I did it (on Windows 2000):
- Download two zip-files from OTN (basic and sqlplus)
- Unzip the files into a directory e.g. "C:\Instant"
- Start a DOS-box
- PATH environment variable should contain "C:\Instant"
- TNS_ADMIN environment variable should point to a
  directory containing TNSNAMES.ORA.
- Run: sqlplus system/manager@MY10GDB
- It works!

PATH and TNS_ADMIN can be set permanently using "My
Computer" =3D=3D> Properties =3D=3D> Advanced =3D=3D> Environment
Variables.

Advantages compared to traditional client:
- No need to recompile (Unix).
- No installer required.
- No data needed in Windows registry.
- No ORACLE_HOME Selector.
- No ORA_NLS considerations (Instant Client knows,
where the NLS-files are in the basic-package).
- No GUI troubles.
- No questions asked.
- It's Beatiful!

A few disadvantages:
- 10g Client does not support "Oracle Names" as
naming method. Hence the 10g Instant Client does
  not support "Oracle Names".
- When trying to make Instant Client work with
"Directory Naming" it failed (for me).
- Directory Naming works with 10g traditional Client.

I have tested the Windows 2000 client against 10g
databases running on Linux and Windows 2000 servers.

Jesper Haure
